Our History
In May 1986, ARC-EN-CIEL Kindergarten school was born in Lome – Togo – in the neighborhood of Kodjoviakopé, on a 1800 square meters plot of land that used to be a garden, with the construction of four classes going from the small section to the big section of early yearsschool, as well as an office and a hut. The work was completed end of August of the same year with the construction of toilet facilities, a play area and the arrangement of a large green grass garden to be used as a playground for the pupils. Few years later, in 1990, the Arc-en-ciel primary school was also built just at 800 meters from the Kindergarten, with four classes, an office for the secretariat and one for the management, toilet facilities, a a deposit and a sports field. A fifth class was added in the following year.
Over the years, considering the advancement of pupils into higher grades and following the request of parents to continue offering their children a quality education at the high school level as well, the construction of additional rooms – placed at the first floor over the primary school and meant to host middle school classrooms - was initiated in 1994 during the summer holidays. A library, a computer room and a science lab were added in the following year. In order to gather the middle and the high school in the same campus, a new primary school was built at 200 meters from the high school with all the necessary equipment. Thus, the old building became the secondary school.
In June 1999, ARC-EN-CIEL has became a truly international school following the authorization granted to teach the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program, known extensively as a high level program used in the best schools worldwide. One year later, AEC presented its first candidates to the diploma exam of the said program, offering to its students from Lome the opportunity to access the best universities in the world.
To ease the access to its structures also to students coming from outside Lome, in 2002 the school started to provide boarding facilities, with the construction of four well-equipped apartments in the primary school campus; the construction of an additional building with two extra classes and a new apartment of six rooms followed.
In 2004, ARC-EN-CIEL extended its pedagogic offer in Lome by opening its English section with the ‘Green School’, which uses the IB program as well. This section has advanced over the years with the addition of an increasing number of students, getting today to cover all classes from kindergarten to high school. The building most recently added (in 2014-2015) in the East part of the High School campus is indeed hosting the Green School.
Arc-en-ciel International School is currently the first and only francophone school in West Africa to have received the official authorizations to teach the I.B. program at all levels: for high school in 1999, for middle school in 2013 and for kindergarten and primary school in 2016. It is this peculiarity, as well its modern structures and its team of highly qualified teachers and managers, that make of Arc-en-Ciel International School the best international school in the country.
Over more than 30 years, the School has received students from more than 40 different nationalities. Graduates of Arc-en-Ciel International School continue their studies at recognized universities in France, the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Switzerland, Morocco, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Togo and beyond.
